Unlike fixed platforms, Mr. Charlie could be towed to a location, submerged to the seafloor for drilling, and then refloated and moved again, dramatically reducing costs and expanding where offshore drilling was possible. The rig operated in water depths of up to 40 feet, which was considered cutting-edge at the time.
Mr. Charlie remained in service for more than 30 years, drilling hundreds of wells and proving the commercial viability of mobile offshore rigs. Its success paved the way for jack-up rigs, semi-submersibles, and today's deepwater offshore drilling technologies.
