On November 20, 1980, a routine drilling operation by Texaco went disastrously wrong beneath Lake Peigneur in Louisiana. While drilling for oil, the crew accidentally punctured a salt mine below the lakebed—triggering a massive whirlpool that swallowed the drilling rig, 11 barges, trucks, and even parts of a botanical garden.
Within hours, the once shallow freshwater lake had drained completely into the mine's caverns, reversing the flow of nearby waterways and leaving witnesses stunned. Against all odds, every worker survived, escaping moments before the vortex consumed everything around them.
When the chaos settled, Lake Peigneur was reborn as a deep saltwater lake, its ecosystem and landscape permanently changed—a haunting reminder of nature's unpredictability and the power of human error in the pursuit of energy.
