TANKER SPILLS OFF RHODE ISLAND!

The World Prodigy oil spill occurred on June 23, 1989, when the Greek tanker ran aground on Brenton Reef near Newport, Rhode Island, releasing 6,873 barrels of No. 2 fuel oil into Narragansett Bay. Despite the initial concern, the response was swift and effective, with cleanup operations led by the U.S. Coast Guard and local agencies beginning almost immediately.

By June 27, 1989, just four days after the incident, major cleanup operations were officially completed. Environmental damage was minimal compared to other oil spills of the era. Most of the oil evaporated or was recovered before it could significantly impact sensitive coastal areas. The quick resolution of the incident highlighted the effectiveness of well-organized spill response efforts.
