PRESIDENT NIXON LAUNCHES PROJECT INDEPENDENCE

On November 7, 1973, in the midst of the Arab oil embargo, President Richard Nixon launched Project Independence—a sweeping national plan to achieve American energy self-sufficiency by 1980. Modeled after the Manhattan Project, the initiative sought to free the United States from its dependence on foreign oil, which had left the nation vulnerable to geopolitical shocks.

Project Independence called for a mix of strategies: expanding domestic oil and gas exploration, improving energy efficiency, and investing in alternative energy research. It represented a defining moment in U.S. energy policy, uniting technology, industry, and government in pursuit of long-term energy security.

Although full independence was never achieved, Nixon's announcement reshaped how the nation viewed energy—transforming it from a commodity into a matter of national strategy and resilience.
