The Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant, located in Obninsk, Russia, was the world's first grid-connected nuclear power plant. It began operations on June 27, 1954, with a small electrical capacity of 5 megawatts. Designed primarily as an experimental reactor, Obninsk played a crucial role in the early development of nuclear energy and served as a model for future nuclear power plants. After nearly five decades of operation, the plant was officially shut down on April 30, 2002, due to its outdated technology and the availability of more advanced reactors. Despite its closure, the reactor has been preserved as a historical site, recognizing its significance in nuclear history. Today, Obninsk remains an important center for nuclear research and education in Russia.
