NUCLEAR-POWERED SHIP DOCKS IN GEORGIA

On Wednesday, August 22, 1962, the N.S. Savannah—the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship—arrived in Georgia. A symbol of innovation during the Atomic Age, Savannah wasn't built for war but for peace: a demonstration of how nuclear energy could revolutionize global shipping.

Fueled by a compact reactor instead of diesel, the ship sailed thousands of miles with fewer emissions and no need to refuel frequently. Though it never sparked a commercial fleet, Savannah remains a landmark in exploring peaceful nuclear applications beyond the power grid.
