LEDUC NO. 1 LAUNCHES ALBERTA'S OIL ERA

On January 23, 1947, the Leduc No. 1 well near Edmonton, Alberta, struck oil, marking the official start of Alberta's commercial oil industry. The discovery sparked a surge in exploration throughout the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, ultimately transforming Canada into a major global oil producer.

The initial Leduc well produced around 300 barrels per day, but subsequent wells in the area quickly ramped up production to thousands of barrels daily, fueling rapid economic growth. At the time, Alberta's population was just over 750,000, making the oil boom a transformative force for local communities and infrastructure.

This milestone also established Alberta as a hub for technological innovation in drilling and refining, attracting investment and shaping Canada's long-term energy strategy for decades.
