J. HOWARD PEW AND THE RISE OF SUN OIL

January 27, 1882 marks the birth of J. Howard Pew, who would go on to become president of Sun Oil Company (Sunoco) and one of the most influential figures in mid-20th-century American oil. Under Pew's leadership, Sun Oil expanded aggressively across refining, pipelines, and retail marketing, helping shape how petroleum products reached U.S. consumers.

By the 1940s and 1950s, Sun Oil ranked among the top U.S. integrated oil companies, operating major refineries on the East Coast and a growing national service-station network. During Pew's tenure, Sunoco also became an early adopter of branded gasoline and nationwide marketing, helping standardize fuel quality and pricing in a rapidly motorizing America.

Beyond operations, Pew was a strong advocate for domestic energy independence, arguing that U.S. oil production was essential to economic stability and national security — views that influenced both industry policy and public debate during World War II and the postwar boom.
