ESSO REBRANDS AS EXXON

On January 1, 1973, Standard Oil of New Jersey officially rebranded its U.S. downstream and retail operations from Esso to Exxon, completing a major corporate identity shift after a year of test-marketing the Exxon name. The change unified branding across states where the Esso name had faced trademark restrictions dating back to the original Standard Oil breakup. At the time of the rebrand, the company operated thousands of service stations across the United States, making Exxon one of the most visible consumer-facing oil brands in the country. Standard Oil of New Jersey was also among the largest oil companies in the world by revenue, with operations spanning refining, petrochemicals, and international crude production.

The Exxon name quickly became dominant in U.S. fuel marketing and laid the foundation for decades of brand recognition. This rebranding move helped modernize the company's image and positioned Exxon for future expansion, including its eventual merger with Mobil in 1999 to form ExxonMobil.
