EKOFISK CONFIRMS NORTH SEAL OIL POTENTIAL

On March 27, 1968, appraisal drilling confirmed the Ekofisk oil field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea as a commercially viable discovery. Originally struck in late 1967 by Phillips Petroleum, Ekofisk proved that large-scale offshore oil production was possible in one of the world's most challenging marine environments.

At its peak, Ekofisk produced more than 350,000 barrels of oil per day, making it one of the most productive offshore fields of its era. The discovery also accelerated the development of concrete gravity-based platforms, an engineering innovation designed to withstand harsh North Sea storms. At the time, Norway's population was just under 4 million, yet the field would help fund what became one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds.

Ekofisk marked the beginning of Norway's transformation from a fishing-based economy into a global energy powerhouse, reshaping offshore drilling and petroleum policy worldwide.
