DR. SEUSS: EARLY CAREER WITH STANDARD OIL

On January 14, 1928, Theodor Seuss Geisel, later known worldwide as Dr. Seuss, published his first cartoon in Judge magazine while working with Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. During this period, Geisel honed his unique illustration style while creating advertisements and promotional art for the oil giant. At the time, Standard Oil was a major force in U.S. petroleum, distributing millions of gallons of gasoline and kerosene annually. Geisel's work helped humanize the brand, making oil marketing more approachable and engaging to the public. Interestingly, New York City's population in 1928 exceeded 7.9 million, providing a massive audience for these early ads. This chapter in Geisel's career shows how creativity intersected with the industrial energy boom, blending artistry with the business of oil and gas advertising.
