BLACK SUNDAY!

On May 2, 1982, a day now known as Black Sunday, Exxon abruptly pulled out of its $5 billion Colony Oil Shale Project in Parachute, Colorado. This decision came as a shock to the local community, leading to the immediate layoff of more than 2,000 workers. The project had promised economic growth and job security, so its sudden cancellation sent shockwaves through the region.

Local businesses, many of which had expanded in anticipation of the oil shale boom, quickly shuttered. The economic fallout was severe, with thousands of families forced to leave the area in search of work elsewhere. Black Sunday remains a powerful reminder of how energy policy and corporate decisions can rapidly reshape entire communities.
