ATOMS FOR PEACE AND ENERGY!

On May 26, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower formally dedicated the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Pennsylvania, marking it as the first full-scale nuclear power plant in the United States built for peacetime energy production.

This dedication was a significant milestone in the "Atoms for Peace" initiative, symbolizing the nation's commitment to harnessing nuclear energy for civilian purposes. The plant began supplying electricity to the grid on December 18, 1957. Designed under the leadership of Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, Shippingport served as a prototype for future commercial nuclear power plants. Shippingport remained operational until its decommissioning in 1982, after which the site was declared safe for unrestricted use in 1987.
