AN APRIL FOOLS' JOKE TURNS INTO AN OIL BOOM

On April 1, 1911, the Clayco No. 1 well erupted with oil near Electra, Texas, after striking a productive reservoir close to the Red River border with Oklahoma. Because the discovery occurred on April Fools' Day, many locals initially dismissed reports of oil as a prank — until a towering plume of crude proved otherwise.

The well launched one of North Texas' most explosive oil booms. Within a year, more than 1,000 wells were drilled in the Electra field, and daily production surged into the tens of thousands of barrels. Electra's population ballooned from about 2,000 residents to more than 15,000, transforming the small town almost overnight.

The Clayco No. 1 discovery helped cement Texas' reputation as a dominant oil-producing state and demonstrated how quickly petroleum could reshape regional economies.
