AMERICA'S FIRST DRIVE-IN GAS STATION OPENS

On December 1, 1913, the Gulf Refining Company opened the nation's first drive-in gasoline service station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Located at Baum Boulevard and St. Clair Street, the station offered motorists more than just fuel — it provided air, water, tire service, and even tube installation. Gas sold that day for 27 cents a gallon, a small price for what became a huge step in automotive convenience.

This innovation marked the birth of the modern fuel retail industry, transforming how Americans powered their vehicles. Instead of buying gasoline in cans from general stores, drivers could now pull in, fill up, and drive away — safely and efficiently. The Baum Boulevard station laid the groundwork for a nationwide network of service stations, linking oil refiners directly to consumers and shaping the energy distribution systems we still rely on today.
