AMERICA EXPORTS OIL FOR THE FIRST TIME

On November 19, 1861, the brig Elizabeth Watts departed Philadelphia bound for London—its cargo: 901 barrels of Pennsylvania crude and 428 barrels of refined kerosene. This voyage marked America's first-ever oil export, just two years after Edwin Drake drilled the nation's first successful well.

What began as a bold transatlantic shipment would soon spark a new era of global energy trade. By the late 19th century, U.S. petroleum was lighting lamps and fueling industries around the world, cementing America's role as a leading oil exporter.

From a few wooden barrels aboard a brig to today's massive tankers, the export legacy that began in 1861 still fuels economies across the globe.
