ALVENUS SPILL

On July 30, 1984, at exactly 12:36 PM, the UK tanker Alvenus grounded in the Calcasieu River Bar Channel, about 11 miles southeast of Cameron, Louisiana. A massive structural failure ruptured the hull near the No. 2 tanks, spilling 65,500 barrels of Venezuelan Merey and Pilon crude oil into Gulf waters.

Pushed west by wind and current, the oil spread rapidly. Rough weather and the scale of the disaster crippled offshore recovery efforts. It was one of the largest spills in the region—spotlighting critical flaws in tanker construction and emergency readiness.
