JOHN R. BUNN, WILDCATTER!

John R. Bunn was born on June 17, 1901, and became a significant figure in Oklahoma's early oil industry. A wildcatter who had oil fever. Bunn contributed to the understanding of oil field engineering, especially in the Papoose Oil Field of Oklahoma. In 1926, he authored a technical bulletin titled Petroleum Engineering in the Papoose Oil Field for the Oklahoma Geological Survey. He is the subject of the biography Oil Fever: The Biography of John R. Bunn by Doris Cornell, which tells the story of his life and work. His efforts helped establish oil exploration practices in Oklahoma and other regions. Although he is not widely known today, Bunn was one of the early pioneers who helped shape the American energy sector. His legacy can be seen memorialized in a plaque at the Sam Noble Museum which is pictured above.
