HUNTER NO. 1

The Hunter No. 1 well, drilled in Ouachita County, Arkansas, became the state's first commercially successful oil well on April 16, 1921. Located near El Dorado, the well was drilled by Col. Samuel S. Hunter and reached a depth of 2,233 feet before striking oil in the Smackover Formation. This discovery launched Arkansas into the oil industry, leading to a rapid boom that transformed the El Dorado and Smackover areas into major oil-producing regions. Within a year, the town of El Dorado grew from a small community into a bustling oil hub, attracting investors, workers, and companies eager to capitalize on the newfound resource. The success of Hunter No. 1 also paved the way for further exploration, with Arkansas producing millions of barrels of oil in the years that followed. Though oil production in the state has declined over time, the impact of this discovery remains a crucial chapter in Southern U.S. oil history.
