H.L. HUNT, EAST TEXAS LEGEND!

Haroldson Lafayette Hunt, better known as H.L. Hunt, was born on February 17, 1889, in Illinois. After striking it rich in El Dorado, Arkansas—only to lose his fortune—he used his last $109 and a loan from a local clothier to purchase wells from Columbus "Dad" Joiner on November 26, 1930. Leveraging his own pipeline, Hunt capitalized on the rapid expansion of the East Texas Oil Field, propelling himself to oil industry dominance. By 1932, Hunt Production owned 900 wells in East Texas.

On April 5, 1948, Fortune magazine named Hunt the richest man in the U.S., estimating his fortune at $263 million, with a daily production of 65,000 barrels. Adjusted for inflation, that sum would be valued at over $3.4 billion today. Hunt passed away on November 29, 1974, but his influence on the oil industry remains profound. His legacy lives on through his 15 children and numerous descendants, many of whom continue to operate his businesses today.
