11:22On February 28, 1963, the U.S. Army's ML-1 mobile nuclear power plant reached full power. Developed in collaboration with Idaho National Laboratory, ML-1 was a pioneering prototype designed for relocation and off-grid energy generation. While it made history on September 21, 1962, as the first functional mobile nuclear plant, it took another six months to achieve its full energy capacity.
Despite its innovation, ML-1 faced persistent technical challenges, including leaks and temperature control issues, leading to its decommissioning on May 29, 1964. However, its development paved the way for future portable reactors, shaping advancements in mobile nuclear energy.
