COLUMBUS "DAD" JOINER

Born on March 12, 1860, Columbus Marion Joiner earned his place in history as the father of the East Texas Oil Field. After twice losing his fortune in Oklahoma, he moved to Rusk County, Texas, where his persistence paid off—his third well, Daisy Bradford No. 3, struck oil, unveiling what became the largest oil field in the world at the time. Despite ongoing financial struggles, Joiner's discovery transformed the oil industry, though he never saw the same wealth as other wildcatters. He retired in Dallas in 1940 and passed away on March 27, 1947, forever remembered as the "Dad" of East Texas oil.
