On June 4, 1872, Robert Chesebrough was granted a patent for his now-famous "cure-all" product, Vaseline. Made from the byproduct of oil drilling, Chesebrough developed petroleum jelly and used bold marketing tactics to promote it. He would burn his skin in public demonstrations, apply Vaseline to the wounds, and then hand out free samples to the crowd. His showmanship helped build trust in the product and fueled its popularity. According to legend, Chesebrough even ate a spoonful of Vaseline every day until his death at age 96, though this is definitely not recommended today!
