ELENI V SPLIT IN TWO!

Eveni V was a Greek oil tanker carrying 117,280 barrels of oil when it was cut in half by the French ship Roseline on May 6, 1978. The collision, caused by heavy fog off the southern coast of England, resulted in the release of 52,000 barrels of oil. Efforts to recover the remaining oil were only partially successful. The forward section of the tanker ran aground on May 8, carrying approximately 8,000 barrels. The aft section was later destroyed by Navy divers on May 30. Despite the deployment of 22 ships, a three-week cleanup effort, and 240,000 gallons of dispersants, the response had virtually no effect — the oil eventually washed ashore. Tragically, the affected coastline had already suffered from the Torrey Canyon spill just 11 years earlier.
