Makeshift camps, derricks, and equipment filled the area as oilmen rushed to stake their claims. The field had a remarkable success rate, with nearly 95 percent of wells producing oil during the early years. By 1925, Smackover was the leading oil-producing field in the U.S., pumping out around 70 million barrels annually. The discovery also led to the identification of valuable brine deposits, rich in bromine and later lithium. While oil production eventually declined, the area's industrial importance endured through mineral extraction.
