FIRST ELECTRIC MOTOR PATENT!

The first patent for an electric motor was issued on February 25, 1837, to Thomas Davenport, a Vermont blacksmith. The patent described "applying magnetic and electromagnetic power as a moving principle for machinery," laying the foundation for what we now recognize as the DC motor.

Davenport faced significant challenges in securing his patent—his initial patent was lost in a fire, and the final one was only granted in 1837. Despite his groundbreaking invention, financial struggles and his relentless pursuit of success ultimately left him bankrupt, and he never lived to see the impact of his work.
