CASPER REFINERY OPENS!

10:54 Wyoming's first refinery began operations on March 5, 1895, initially producing 100 barrels per day of various petroleum products, from cylinder oil to heavy grease. By 1898, production had doubled, expanding to seven grades of oil products. Built by the Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Company, the refinery operated until 1911, when it was shut down and demolished after the Casper City Council deemed it a fire hazard based on concerns raised by the Casper Commercial Club.

While it was Casper's first refinery, it was far from the last. The city saw continued success in the refining industry, especially after Standard Oil of Indiana purchased 84 acres to build a gasoline refinery. By 1922, it had become the largest refinery in the world, processing over 1.35 million barrels of crude oil into gasoline.
