On April 11, 1991, the oil tanker MT Haven suffered a catastrophic explosion and sank off the coast of Genoa, Italy, in what remains one of the worst oil spills in the Mediterranean. The vessel, a Cypriot-flagged tanker, was carrying 1,000,000 barrels of heavy Iranian crude oil when an explosion during a routine oil transfer ignited a massive fire. This would result in the loss of 6 crew member lives and the MT Haven. The fire would burn approximately 450,000 barrels, and when the ship broke apart, an estimated 142,857 barrels of oil released into the sea. The wreck ultimately settled at a depth of almost 100 meters, and remnants of oil continued leaking for years.
