ATHENIAN VENTURE, SPLIT IN TWO!

On April 22, 1988, the Cypriot-registered tanker Athenian Venture was discovered by the Canadian research vessel Hudson approximately 400 miles southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, split in two and engulfed in flames.

The vessel had departed from Amsterdam, Netherlands, carrying about 250,000 barrels of unleaded gasoline destined for New York. The bow section sank at 2:00 PM on the same day, while the stern section remained afloat, burning for nearly seven weeks before sinking on June 17, about 200 miles from the Azores. Tragically, all 29 individuals on board—24 crew members and five spouses—were presumed dead, with only one body recovered during search operations. The cause of the explosion remains undetermined, though reports suggest the vessel was in poor condition at the time of the incident.
