RED FORK FIELD BRINGS BOOM!

On June 24, 1901, just before midnight, the Red Fork oil field experienced its last quiet night. The discovery well blew over the top of the derrick, signaling the beginning of an oil rush that would bring major changes to the area. The following day, after a telegram was sent asking for help, people began arriving in large numbers.

Although the well produced only about 10 barrels a day, the excitement drew a wave of wannabe wildcatters hoping to strike it rich. The sudden influx of fortune seekers was so overwhelming that the government temporarily paused leasing tribal lands for drilling. While Red Fork never became one of the largest producing fields, it generated enough attention to attract thousands to Tulsa. The field's story is not about massive output, but about the energy and ambition it sparked. Red Fork played a meaningful role in the early days of Oklahoma's oil history. It helped position Tulsa as a growing center for the oil industry. What it lacked in volume, it made up for in influence and excitement.
