Today, March 18, we celebrate the birthday of Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the diesel engine in 1898. Born in Paris, France, Diesel revolutionized combustion technology by creating an engine far more efficient than steam engines, designed to run on various fuels without an ignition system.
Despite his groundbreaking invention, Diesel never fully witnessed its global impact. While traveling to England to visit a new diesel engine plant and meet with the British Navy, he mysteriously vanished during his voyage from Antwerp. His body was later discovered at sea, and while his death was ruled a suicide, numerous conspiracy theories still surround his passing.
