BLOWOUT PREVENTER TRANSFORMS DRILLING

On January 12, 1926, James Abercrombie and Harry Cameron were granted a patent for the ram-type blowout preventer (BOP), a device that would dramatically improve oil and gas well safety. Before this invention, uncontrolled blowouts frequently destroyed rigs, spilled thousands of barrels of oil, and endangered workers. The BOP allowed operators to seal high-pressure wells, preventing catastrophic blowouts and making deep drilling feasible. The first BOPs were tested at wells producing pressures over 1,000 psi, paving the way for deeper offshore and onshore exploration. This device quickly became a standard safety measure worldwide and has been credited with saving hundreds of lives and millions of barrels of oil over the decades. By introducing controlled drilling, the BOP also helped accelerate global petroleum development, setting safety benchmarks still observed in today's ultra-deepwater projects.
