PASARLAPUDI BLOWOUT SHAKES INDIA'S OIL INDUSTRY

On January 8, 1995, a catastrophic rig blowout occurred at Pasarlapudi in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The uncontrolled release of oil and gas ignited a massive fire that burned for weeks, making it one of India's largest blowouts in oil-exploration history. The well, operated in a high-pressure reservoir, released thousands of barrels of oil per day, disrupting local operations and requiring extensive firefighting and containment efforts. At the time, the surrounding region had a population of over 1 million, and the disaster highlighted the risks of rapid offshore and onshore exploration. The Pasarlapudi incident led to stricter safety protocols for Indian oil operators and emphasized the importance of blowout preventers, emergency response planning, and international collaboration in managing high-risk wells.
