DRAKE'S OIL STRIKE

On August 27, 1859, Edwin Drake struck oil near Titusville, Pennsylvania—drilling the first successful commercial oil well in the United States. At just 69 feet deep, this modest well triggered a boom that transformed the global energy landscape.

Before this, oil was collected in small quantities from surface seeps. Drake's use of a steam-powered drill changed everything, proving that deeper reserves could be accessed efficiently. His breakthrough sparked a frenzy of exploration, leading to the rise of Standard Oil, rapid industrialization, and the beginning of America's long-standing relationship with petroleum.
